The pecan
originates in North America and is similar to the walnut. The Native Americans
valued the pecan as nourishment for the winter and called it “pakan” (nut
requiring a stone to crack). American astronauts took pecans with them into
outer space during the Apollo flights as their only fresh food.
Pecans taste
aromatic, mild, and sweet-savoury. They contain unsaturated fatty acids, the
minerals phosphorous, potassium, and magnesium, as well as trace elements such
as iron, zinc, and copper. Furthermore, the vitamin B complex and vitamin E are
contained in considerable concentrations. Our nuts from South Africa are cracked
without heat. This allows for the natural aroma and valuable ingredients to be
retained.
